Purpose, Intention, and Direction.
These three qualities tend to be the most powerful energies a healthy man can be inhabiting at any one moment. There are many facets to each of these, but they surmise most of what healthy masculinity inhabits. The reason I write today about these qualities in a man stems from the inspiration of knowing that I will soon be a father to a son. What a remarkable opportunity! The lineage of men in my own family has not been the greatest. This is the case for many, many men in our society. Absent fathers, emotion-less males, or an inability or difficulty in dealing with themselves as a whole, have certainly produced a culture of adult boys that desperately need to grow into healthy men. My father was an abusive alcoholic. He had no ability to deal with his emotions, no mechanism to understand how to behave with purpose, intention, and direction. He never learned this from his father. Fortunately for me, my mother divorced him when I was very young. She removed herself and my older siblings from an extremely unhealthy environment. My father lived out the remaining years of his life in solitude, battling his propensity to numb his mind and heart with alcohol. Years after his death, I still pour my heart out to him for what he wasn’t able to do in his own life; the potential he let slip away. This story is all too common in our culture. Some men grow up and out of these situations, while others replicate the story of their fathers. And so on, the cycle continues. My aim is to help bring some information to men at large; to those who may come across this blog. In my practice, I work with men in these same areas. I help men discover more about their purpose, intention, and direction in life. There is always hope, there is always love, there is always a way. Having an opportunity to help raise a healthy boy into an even healthier man is humbling. I’m filled with love, hope, reverence. I’m filled with purpose, intention, and direction for my life in the name of raising him well. I’m always going to have more to learn. That journey will never end. And so goes the journey of healthy manhood. It is ongoing. Yet, we are called to grow from boys to men. And we need each other to do so. There will probably be many more blog entries along these same lines as the months and years unfold. I am moved by his anticipated entrance into mine and my wife’s life. If you’re a man reading this and would like to cultivate a healthier sense of manhood; inhabit a firmer state of healthy masculinity, then contact me. Let’s talk. Let’s help you get started on that journey. With love, Noel
